Outrageous Weddings

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

You might think your site fees and the prices for your flowers are outrageous, but check out these weddings that give the words “outrageous weddings” a new meaning.

1. In Texas, Chidi Ogbuta had her childhood dream fulfilled when Absolutely Edible Cakes baked her an amazing wedding cake. The cake was 5′4″ and built to resemble the bride in likeness and in size. Photo and story from nbci.com.

2. Some couples are choosing to get married in a graveyard, and others at a racetrack. Check here for more outrageous wedding sites!

3. This wedding story came from Bridezilla.com. Tina Boaz-Murray is captured with her little zoo friend here. The couple got married at the Houston Zoo, which they thought was “romantic.” Here she is posing with one of the animals there.

Ladies, take the leap…

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Did you know that according to folk tradition, leap day is when women can take the lead in popping the question? And, even better, tradition states that their proposals cannot be refused! In fact, according to legend, Queen Margaret of Scotland passed a law in 1288 requiring that fines be imposed if a marriage proposal was refused by a man - fines for refusal ranged from a kiss to a dress.

We thought this would be an interesting fact to share with any of your girlfriends who are on the fence about popping the question! If she can get her plan in place quickly, tomorrow may be the perfect date to go for it.

Did you propose to your fiancé? If so, post a comment and share your story with us.

Changing your name

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

I’ve been thinking a lot about what it will be like to have a new last name. It’s so weird and something many of my girlfriends went giddy over while they were all engaged. I didn’t agonize over hyphenating it or not changing it at all. My full name is so long that adding another thing to it would be excruciating. And leaving my maiden name was never really an option for me. I wanted to change it as a kind of ritual. Anyway, I’ve been web surfing reading about all the things you have to do to go through this process. One thing I remember reading somewhere was that it is important to do all of your name changes on important stuff like your ID and passport before your honeymoon bound. With all the restrictions at airports these days, your vacation will end a lot sooner than you think if you don’t have the appropriate identification. It is another thing I need to think about in the midst of all the wedding planning. But good to know that there are kits you can buy to help you make all the necessary changes. Before I got that far, I realized suddenly that I really need to embrace my name as it is. Soon I will have a whole new name all together. It seems so strange to suddenly have that changed after it has been part of my identity my whole life. Then I realized how important my save the dates and wedding invitations are. I get to see my full name, maiden name and all, in fancy font and in print. That’s something I can treasure forever!
