A Honeymoon Diary: Joyce & Alex’s Adventures

Wedding Paper Divas is bursting with staff brides who are currently planning their weddings. We’re happy to share their stories with you as a part of this fun feature!

What makes everything so worthwhile after all the intense planning leading up to your wedding day? I can sum it up in two fabulous, exciting, liberating words—the honeymoon!

My wedding was in July and the most exciting part of the wedding planning process was to decide where I was going to skip off to as the new Mr. and Mrs. Most honeymoon spots in different parts of the world endure a severe rainy season during July. We brainstormed over a couple of popular destinations, like the Maldives, Indonesia and Bora Bora, but realized that all of those places would be in hurricane, typhoon and monsoon season. We finally narrowed it down to Dubai and Seychelles—a couple of places in the world that we knew would be rain free during July! There was also something very exotic about going to the Middle East and part of Africa.

Although we didn’t have much time to plan the details of our honeymoon, we found that to be a perfect setup for a relaxing time. We stayed three nights in Dubai and nine days in the Seychelles. Dubai was ridiculously hot, but fun! We went sand bashing (short for riding an SUV in the dessert dunes) and swam along the Jumeirah Beach.

Seychelles was a slow paced island filled overwhelmingly with hospitable and charming people. We visited two of the many tiny islands, Mahe and La Digue. Our personal favorite was La Digue, a cute and quaint town whose main mode of transportation revolved around bikes! As such, we were able to navigate around town effortlessly, picking up our delicious dinner at nearby takeouts and the like. The waters were gorgeous and crystal clear, which made them perfect for snorkeling.

All in all, we had the most wonderful and breathtaking experience.  In fact, we are still reminiscing about it.

One piece of advice that I left with after running into a couple of issues is to prepare months in advance a list of contents to put in your emergency kit. In short, you MUST bring an emergency kit!

Here are a couple items that you can include, to start:

•    Band-aids, antiseptic ointment, gauze for any unexpected injuries
•    Allergy medication like Claritin, just in case…
•    Imodium or Pepto Bismol for stomach related issues
•    Pain killers for the occasional headache
•    Kleenex
•    Any prescription medications you typically rely on
•    Insect repellant

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen – A cute love story and sure to be a favorite among animal lovers!

The Help by Kathryn Stockett – A wonderful blend of heart and history, you won’t want to put it down.

Don't Sweat the Small Stuff

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff… by Richard Carlson – Cheerful, insightful, and a fantastic way to de-stress pool-side.

The Time Traveler's Wife

The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger – Imaginative and romantic with a science fiction element. It’s a wonderful beach read.

Also consider anything by David Sedaris if you’re in the mood for something hilarious, or by Barbara Kingsolver for something more touching.

This week we’re giving you fresh ideas for a faux destination wedding inspired by your honeymoon location. From food and drinks to decor and wedding stationery, we think a honeymoon-inspired wedding blends together the drama and luxury of an exotic locale with the comfort and affordability of a local celebration.

To continue this trend, we’ve selected a few of our favorite wedding gowns and bridesmaids dresses to match a haute couture honeymoon destination. Which look would match your wedding best?

Look like a Grecian goddess when you walk down the aisle. This one-shouldered gown is perfect for a day spend daydreaming about island hopping in the Mediterranean.

Buenos Aires

Ruffles, refined elegance and a pop of vibrant color combine to make this gorgeous look from The Dessy Group the ideal way to infuse your big day with the style of your South American destination.

Paris is a city full of love and luxury, so make sure to have a bit of fun with fashion on your big day. I love this wedding dress from J.Crew. Doesn’t she look like a high fashion version of the Eiffel Tower?

Tropical Escapes

Dress your bridesmaids in bright hues with colorful bouquets to bring a little island style to your celebration. This fun ruffled dress would be the perfect complement to hot pink blooms.

Out of Africa

Don’t be afraid to use prints and patterns in your bridesmaids dresses, especially if you are jetting off on a safari for your honeymoon. This look has the right blend of neutrals and bold hues.

The vibrant pink and subtle gold hues on this dress seem perfectly suited for a wedding that foreshadows a few exciting adventures in India.

Give your wedding a bit of an Alice in Wonderland theme with crisp green hedges, Alice-blue bridesmaids dresses and playful checkered patterns.
