Wedding Song Inspiration

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Choosing a wedding song for your first dance can be tough. You have so many options! Do you go with a traditional song, like Etta James’ “At Last,” or do you opt for a more modern song like Jack Johnson’s “Better Together”?

I think the best first dance songs are personal and full of meaning–your song as a couple, or at least a classic love song you’ve always adored. If you need some inspiration, check out Bridal Guide’s Top 90 Wedding Songs. DiscJockeys also has a great list of Popular Wedding Songs, and WeddingChannel.com has a cool wedding song search tool to help you narrow down your options.

If you are looking for a quirky modern song to add some unique flair to your ceremony, try out these sweet, modern love songs:

  • Ingrid Michaelson– “The Way I Am”
  • Ben Harper– “Beloved One” or “Forever”
  • Dave Matthews Band– “Crush”
  • Robin Thicke– “Lost Without You”
  • Counting Crows– “Accidentally in Love”
  • James Morrison– “You Give Me Something”

Rant or Rave: An Unusual First Dance

Friday, August 1st, 2008

If you search on YouTube for “Wedding Dances,” you will find thousands of videos showcasing funny, unique and often impressive first dance performances by brides and grooms. From hip hop dancers to couples who have tirelessly practiced a perfect imitation of the choreography from the final scene of “Dirty Dancing,” there seems to be a growing trend among brides and grooms to turn the traditional first dance into an all-out performance. What do you think? Would you put your moves on display during your first dance? Does a funky first dance make you want to rant or rave?

Rocking Out at Your Reception

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Have you decided what you’re going to do for your first dance? My husband and I had just one lesson, but thought it was well worth it. We danced to “Stolen” by Dashboard Confessionals, and took what we learned and made it our own. First dancing slow and then we surprised guests by showing off the moves we picked up from that four hour class. The cheers we got were totally worth all the money, hours of practice and the nerves we felt beforehand.

I’ve noticed that this type of dancing is getting quite popular and has inspired the latest reality TV show. “Rock the Reception” on TLC showcases couples as they learn how to surprise guests with their fancy footwork. Kind of like a spin-off from the YouTube video I showed in a previous post, this one is so fun and it really rocks!

Wedding Dance

Friday, May 30th, 2008

It’s cool to see how couples are really taking risks out there on the dance floor. One wedding I went to featured the couple dancing first to a choreographed slow song and then sped up with something fast and funny. What I’ve been noticing on the Internet is surprising first dances in which couples seemingly dance to a slow, romantic melody and then the music is cut and the laughs begin! Today’s bride and groom want to really entertain guests instead of making them watch several minutes of boring and awkward shuffling back and forth. As a result, it looks like they’re taking lessons and practicing before hand and the results are hilarious. See for yourself!
