Rant or Rave: Giving Money as a Wedding Gift

There are lots of opinions and advice on etiquette when it comes to giving wedding gifts (and getting them). We thought we’d get your thoughts on giving cash for weddings.

How do you feel about giving cash as a gift? Some can’t get past the thought that it’s tacky… others want their hard-earned money to be as useful as it can be. Would you rather pick out a thoughtful gift for the couple or give them money and let them use it however they see fit? Rant or rave!

If I know the couple well, as in I have regular dinners at their home, I give cash. I know that’s what they need most as they’ll be very appreciative. But when it’s not as close a friendship or I can’t attend the wedding, I go with a gift. I have yet to meet a bride who isn’t grateful for straight cash. Let’s be honest, most couples already have a home set up and don’t need a new coffee maker. Typical registries are becoming dated — I’m making one simply to appease tradition.

I’m with the “Rave” group on this one. The cash and gift cards I received at my wedding were just as nice to receive as the gifts from our registry!
