The Perfect Proposal: Things to Know

10:00:41 by Katie | 1 Comment

We’ve heard that 80% of engaged or married women say their marriage proposal wasn’t exactly romantic, and we think that’s just plain sad! Sure, not everyone wants to plan out an elaborate scavenger hunt across the city or arrange for a flash mob to take over the street to help pop the question, but there are some simple things you can do to ensure that your proposal is as memorable and wonderful as it deserves to be.

Here are our top tips for the perfect marriage proposal:

1. Know What You Want.

Planning a wedding is one thing, but planning to spend the rest of your life with someone is an entirely different story. Make sure you really know what you want. Can your relationship survive the best of times and the worst of times? Will this person be your partner through thick and thin? Can you stand his or her mother at every family holiday? A happy proposal starts with true commitment.

2. Get Family and Friends Involved.

My personal favorite proposal stories are private, but then include friends and family for a celebration after. Have them make a surprise appearance or play a part in the big event and it’ll make it that much more special for your future spouse.

3. Find the Right Ring.

Don’t get cynical on me just yet! I don’t mean that the ring you choose has to be gigantic or pricey, but it does have to reflect the person you’re giving it to. From vintage styles to chic and modern ones, offbeat colored engagement rings to heirlooms handed down through the family, all you have to do is make sure it’s the right style. After all, this is one of the only accessories that will be worn every day for the rest of your lives together!

4. Pick the Perfect Place.

Get creative and make it personal. There are probably places in your city where everyone seems to propose (here in San Francisco, it’s Coit Tower), but if that spot isn’t personally relevant to you it won’t have the same impact. Trust me—you could propose at the diner you two love to go to for Sunday morning breakfast and it’ll mean more than a fancy restaurant you’ve never been to before.

5. Make a Speech.

I know you’re probably nervous and hoping to just blurt out, “Marry me!” to get it over with, but this is a special moment and the person you’re asking to spend the rest of his or her life with you is going to be hanging on every word. Now is the time to dig deep and come up with a few short things you want to say to lay a foundation of love, respect and trust to build a marriage upon. Just don’t get cliched—no one wants to hear that they had you at hello!

Shipwrecked-Themed Destination Wedding Ideas from Beau-coup

11:36:42 by Katie | 1 Comment

We love this unique take on a destination wedding theme from our wedding favors partner, Beau-coup! It’s the perfect inspiration as you plan a romantic escape for your big day. For more fresh inspiration and wedding ideas, check out the Beau-coup blog.

Winter often makes me long for tropical island getaways, and this week’s theme is the perfect cure for the snow. For this wedding theme, take your inspiration from the days of swashbuckling pirates, mercenaries and worldwide trading expeditions (especially those that ended on exotic islands filled with plenty of promise for a new world and might have held stashed loot).

Set the scene on an isolated beach in a tropical locale, like Hawaii or somewhere in the Caribbean.

Decorate your venue with plenty of netting, local greenery and flowers. Get utilitarian by using coconuts, empty bottles and seashells to house some of your wedding centerpieces.

Use old navigation charts to add a dash of adventure to your decor, get creative by using palm fronds to house your bouquet and make your entrance or getaway on a row boat. You could even use a vintage trunk to house your wedding favors, and use pieces of driftwood as place cards.

Take your cue from Keira Knightley in Pirates of the Caribbean and wear your hair in flowing tousled waves paired with a long flowy gown with plenty of ruffled details at the bottom and lacy overlays, or keep it simple and make your statement in your jewelry. Be sure to provide some cute parasols for your bridesmaids and get ready to impress.

For your food, be sure to use some of the local fare and to incorporate plenty of seafood and tropical fruit in your sauces and dips. You can also use the fruit as garnish for your drinks.

Do We Have to Send Save the Date Cards?

10:00:58 by Katie | No Comments

To be honest, we love our collection of save the date cards so much, this question tends to shock us (why wouldn’t you want to send them? They’re adorable!). But we do understand that some brides on a budget might be looking for ways to trim down their stationery spending. Here’s what we suggest, as framed by one reader’s question.

Dear Divas,

Do we have to send save the date cards? We’re on a budget and looking for ways to keep the wedding simple.

Thanks for the advice,

M.D.N.

Dear M.D.N.,

We don’t think, “Do we have to?” is the right question to ask in budget situations, but more “What’s the cost/benefit ratio?” And, quite frankly, save the date cards are one of the most useful tools in any wedding planner’s toolkit.

Although your year is going to be spent planning and prepping for that all-important date, your friends and family members aren’t going to have the day penciled in until they hear from you. This means you can personally call everyone on your list and let them know (hoping they’ll jot it down), count on all of your guests having nothing to do that day so they can squeeze you in when the invitations arrive six weeks before the big day, or simply send save the date cards. Which sounds more appealing?

You can even send save the date magnets that will hang on the fridge and serve as a constant reminder that your big day is looming. Plus, save the date cards can be invaluable in establishing the style and tone of your wedding, so you can make a chic and lasting first impression that will carry through until your big day, AND they come at very budget-friendly prices.

This adorable design, for instance, can be yours for as low as 84¢ each:

So trust us—you can create DIY favors, change your hosted bar to beer and wine only and finagle a deal with your venue, but whatever you do don’t skimp on save the dates!

DIY Table Numbers Take Two

9:00:14 by Katie | 2 Comments

Last time, we featured an easy way to display table numbers and menus using rustic frames and DIY matting. Today, we have a DIY table number project that takes a bit more effort, but is still super chic and fairly easy to do.

Here’s how to get started…

DIY Table Number Supplies:

  • A garden pot or other small vessel
  • Styrofoam
  • Wooden dowels
  • Ribbon
  • Cardstock to match your theme
  • Faux moss from the craft store
  • Hand-drawn table numbers
  • Tape or glue

Step One: Prep Dowel and Styrofoam

Cut the styrofoam to fit inside your garden pot without showing over the top. Also, wrap the wooden dowels with ribbon in a coordinating texture and color.

Step Two: Attach Table Number and Cardstock to Dowel

First, trim the cardstock to be just a tad bigger than the size of your table number. Lie the cut cardstock down and use your tape or glue to attach the ribbon-wrapped dowel to the top.

Next, tape or glue the table number on top of the cardstock so that the dowel is sandwiched in between.

Step Three: Insert Dowel into Styrofoam

Make sure the dowel reaches down far enough so that it isn’t top-heavy or unstable.

Step Four: Add Moss or Decorative Covering

This allows you to camouflage the styrofoam while also adding a unique touch.

Step Five: Enjoy!

Here are two different looks you can achieve—one with a simple terra cotta pot and another with a more rustic, decorative vase. We’re also featuring our Enchanting Forest place cards below to complete the look!

We want to hear your creative table number ideas, too! Send your photos to blog@weddingpaperdivas.com and we’ll post them for all of our fans and followers.
