The “After” Party

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Most brides and grooms can’t wait to run out the door after their reception to start their honeymoon, and who can blame them! With so many last minute preparations right before the wedding they are bound to be exhausted when the reception is over. But for those couples who want to keep the party going, there is a new trend of couples throwing wedding “after” parties. These parties can take place the night of the reception or even the day after, and it gives the couple the ability to spend more time with close friends and family who they may not have spent quality time with the day of the wedding.

If you are thinking about throwing an after party, below are some cute party invitations to help you continue the celebration:

Two Shoes

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Truth be told-one of my biggest fears for the wedding is that I’ll get so many blisters from my wedding shoes that I won’t be able to dance or even move. Imagine six hours of standing, walking, and dancing and you can imagine how tired and achy your feet will be.

A lot of people will probably advise you to wear your new shoes a few weeks before the wedding to break them in. I tried one day and had so many blisters I gave up. Honestly, I didn’t do a lot of shoe shopping before I chose the one I have now. I figured that most people won’t see my shoes anyway and got something inexpensive. What I learned is it’s best to find pretty but comfy shoes.

Another new trend that I have been hearing a lot about lately is buying two shoes, one for your photographs and one for the rest of the night! The fantasy of wearing my cute silver heels for an hour and then changing into flats, seems like a dream to me. And one that I might really make happen. Then I started to think what it might be like to have two different types of everything. A pair of complimentary save the dates or wedding invitations would be unique and makes it easier for you to choose between two.

Check out the color combo below, it would be fun way to incorporate your wedding colors for your save the dates.

Engagement Parties

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Are you recently engaged? If so, congratulations! Know that being engaged is a tradition that has started as far back as the year 1215. This is when Pope Innocent III decreed that marriages must be publicly known. And the tradition of giving an engagement ring began in 1477 when a royal emperor gave his beloved a diamond ring as an engagement present. Aren’t we lucky that he did?

Traditionally hosted by the bride’s family, couples today are hosting their own parties. A great way to get your families acquainted before the big day, it’s also a good excuse to celebrate your engagement and commitment to one another.

Usually a few months following the proposal, engagement parties should only include guests that you are planning to invite to the wedding. Any way you do it, make sure to make it comfortable, fun and special for everyone! One of my friends had the event at her future in-laws. A lawn filled with friends, family, homemade food, and festive lights decorating huge white tents made the event memorable!

Here are a few engagement party invitations to make your perfect party complete.

I just had my third and final bridal shower. I must say they were all tons of fun and I’m so grateful that I have friends and family who wanted to do this for me. If you’re throwing a shower for someone you love, here’s a great idea for you and her guests.

Taking inspiration from my post on Kara’s cupcakes, why not match your shower invitations with cupcake favors? Here’s a few that would go together nicely!

Lesson Learned

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

There’s a lot of little things you learn about your own wedding that no one can really tell you until you go through it. I hope this post will help prevent the same thing from happening to you. When choosing your wedding stationery, don’t go conservative. With your costs exceeding your original budget, it’s easy to understand why some, like me, try to keep costs down by limiting the number of stationery ordered.

This was a BIG mistake! I later realized that there were a few people who we wanted to invite but thought we could not accommodate for. In addition, there were just some guests that we forgot to add to our original list. Talking to some other girlfriends I found out that this is really common. Some friends have had to ask families to return their invitations and RSVP cards so that they could reuse them for other guests.

As for my fiance and I? We were extremely embarrassed but were lucky that we found some extra invitations hidden among all our wedding things. Save yourself from having to ask your guests to return their invitations or worse, having to invite additional guests verbatim. Buy several extra sets to keep you covered and safe from having this happen to you.

Here’s a few new designs I love.

Happy Earth Day!

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

It makes me excited to see a lot of companies getting into the green spirit. From fuel efficient automobiles to books on living green, being eco-friendly is suddenly cool. Here at Wedding Paper Divas we too are on a mission to be green. We’re hosting our own special day today internally but for all you green lovers out there who also love our stationery here’s some facts that may interest you:

  1. Did you know that digital printing is environmentally friendly? Traditional offset printing wastes 10-15% of paper in a set-up process called make-ready. The digital process does not have make-ready. We print exactly what is needed and this helps reduce the amount of paper used.
  1. Three cheers for our envelopes! Wedding Paper Divas envelopes are made using hydro power.

Happy Earth Day and happy shopping to all you earth-friendly consumers out there!

Spotlight on Kara’s Cupcakes

Monday, April 21st, 2008

If you have been keeping up with Diva Dialogues and my entries you know that I am a big fan of cupcakes. That’s why I was over the moon with excitement when Kara of Kara’s cupcakes in San Francisco agreed to take time out from her busy schedule to talk with me. So get comfy, grab a sweet snack and enjoy getting to know a little bit about my favorite confection, a cupcake store, and the girl behind it.

Kara’s Cupcakes is so original in that it only sells cupcakes! How did you come up with the idea of having a cupcake store?
Well I always loved sweets. I was deprived of things like candies and cakes growing up because I had a father who was a dentist. I was passionate about sweets and I always, always knew that I wanted to start business. I enrolled at a pastry school with the goal of starting a cupcake business. At that time, cupcakes just started getting popular. It was of course, popular with kids for a long time but then adults started to see it’s a great way to have an indulgent little treat without the guilt.

How did you get started?
I used to be the Northwest Director of sales for Allure magazine where I met with clients such as Gap and worked with their Marketing department. Working in fashion and beauty products was an extension of creating cupcakes. For example, what flavor you pick says to me the owner what kind of style you have. I think designing cupcakes is similar to working with fashion because both start with really cool artistic ideas and are creative outlets.

What inspires you?

I get inspiration from a lot of things in fashion and by what’s in season. For example, our Fleur Del Sel (chocolate cupcake with caramel filling, ganache frosting& fleur del sel) was inspired by chocolate makers that make fleur de sel candies. Our Meyer Lemony (lemon vanilla cupcake with a tart lemon filling and lemon buttercream) was at first seasonal but now year long. Seeing what’s fresh in the market place and observing other confections has brought on a lot of great ideas and flavors as well.

What is your most popular flavor?
Everyone always loves good old fashioned chocolate and vanilla which is why our Chocolate Velvet and Sweet Vanilla are our best-sellers. But it’s also nice to mix things up every once in awhile and add something different. Some days you might feel like trying Passion Fruit and Java.

sweet-vanilla.jpg yummy Sweet Vanilla!

I know you use a lot of local and sometimes organic ingredients in your cupcakes-why is that so important to you?
I think it brings together the community. And the bottom line is that it’s just a great way to keep things close, lowers fuel and energy, keeps relationship going with the community and helps support local businesses.

A lot of couples are opting for cupcakes instead of a traditional wedding cake. What do you think are the benefits of having cupcakes at your wedding?
Cupcakes are fun. Guests get so excited when they see a tier of cupcakes. They wonder what flavors are there and which ones they will we get. Oftentimes, wedding cakes are never eaten. People think ooh it’s so pretty but don’t experience them. A cupcake is like a little gift or present. They are for you, you don’t have to share it, and you don’t have to wait for it to be cut to eat it.

Any trends you’re noticing in terms of colors or themes?
Cupcakes are a big hit with weddings. Though any celebration is a big factor-baby shower, wedding shower, congratulations. A lot of people like initial cupcakes, teddy bear for baby showers. People generally pick color themes and sometimes requests special fondant flowers on their cupcakes. It’s all about the flavor and tastes for any celebration.

What makes Kara’s cupcakes unique?
Kara’s cupcakes sense of community and our ingredients are important components to making are cupcakes delicious and unique. We bake our cakes every hour making it the freshest cake you can get. Sometimes it’s just minutes from the oven.

What would you like to say to our Diva Dialogues readers about Kara’s Cupcakes?
We’re open 7 days week. Our cupcakes are the best! They’re baked fresh with premium local ingredients. Come and try it! It’s delicious!

Table Number Ideas

Friday, April 18th, 2008

I love getting ideas about doing traditional things in a new way. That’s why I was so excited when I came up with this idea!

You got your place cards in order but how about those table cards? If you’re like me and want something attractive, unique and functional you might want to try this.

Choose a folded thank you card and personalize the text to read Table Number instead of your names. You can fill in the table numbers by hand and then, write the names of guests who will be sitting at that table inside the card. Simply place the card near your centerpiece to beautify your table and to help guests learn who they will be sitting next to. These two are from the Wedding Paper Divas Letterpress line. Cool huh?
